This carbon water pipe filter is a great way to make the smoke cleaner before it enters your piece.
It is recommended to always rinse carbon pellets prior to any use - they often have fine black dust in with them that you should rinse before setting up your filter. Pour the bag of filter pellets into a wire strainer fine enough that the pellets won't fall through and rinse until the water runs clear. Allow the carbon to dry completely before use. The benefit of carbon filter pellets is that they have enormous surface area for filtration in each pellet due to microscopic channels throughout. You want them to be totally dry and not full of moisture when you go to use them.
